It depends on which layer you’re working on. Structuring content for AI to extract as direct answers — AEO — can show early movement in weeks. Building the kind of authority AI systems cite broadly — GEO — typically takes three to six months of consistent work. AI models update periodically rather than in real time, which is why consistency over time matters more than any single action.

It involves clear content structure, question-led formatting, and consistent entity signals that AI systems recognise as trustworthy.
Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the practice of building the kind of digital authority that AI systems cite when generating responses. Where AEO is about being the answer to a specific question, GEO is about being recognised as a credible voice in your field more broadly — so that when AI systems synthesise recommendations, your name is part of the picture they draw on. GEO builds over time through consistent signals, third-party mentions, and entity clarity.
SEO is about ranking pages for keywords so humans could click through to your site. AI visibility is about being accurately understood and recommended by AI systems that synthesise answers directly — often without anyone clicking anything. SEO optimised for algorithms. AI visibility optimises for identity coherence. The question shifted from "how do I rank?" to "what does AI believe about me?" Both matter, but they require different thinking.
